Recently, someone asked me a very striking question. “Is there anything significant that happened this year that changed you?” The more I thought about it, the more surprised I was at my answer. Out of all the things I’ve done this 2016- I would have to say turning a year older was the thing that changed me the most.
It’s funny how they say age is just a number. Or how people over 30 still act like they are 18. Or how we make fun of people who act “lola” or “tita” because they suddenly prefer to stay home instead of YOLO the night away. It’s funny because the moment I turned 26- all sorts of realizations came rushing to me.
1.) I realized I need to take care of my skin more- and changed my routine to 80% skin care 20% make up. Something I never understood in my teens.
2.) The importance of the quality of friends over the quantity. Not that you should unfriend people you haven’t spoken to in a while or anything, but just know where each person stands in your life, and make sure to make time for the ones that matter.
3.) I realized it’s better to be nice and humble than to be entitled and superior. If you were born into a well-to-do family, you might not even notice that you might be acting like the latter. I’ve known this for a while now, but looking at other people older than me still act like they own the planet just solidifies the point. Being nice and treating everyone with respect makes you so much more respectable.
4.) FOMO is no longer part of my vocabulary. I’ve done the whole eat-sleep-rave-repeat thing, and I’m over it. If you’re not into that while all the other cool kids are- it’s totally fine. You might be a lola now, but life goes on. Go to bed early and your skin will thank you later.
5.) Its not a sin to fall in love. NAAAKS! I wrote this in the last chapter of my book as well, but let me share a snippet of this thought to you here. We always try to hide our kilig or we act shy when someone teases us about a suitor. Why? Love is a beautiful thing that we are blessed to have. You are lucky to be in love. Others are not so fortunate. So if you are in love- BE IN LOVE. Shout it from the rooftops and give it your 100% because you would expect the same to be given to you.
Honestly, I’ve done a lot of growing up this year. There are so much more things I’d love to share with you, but I’ll save that for another homily. 😛 So to everyone out there getting another year older (and thats everyone out there!), don’t turn away from it. With time comes change, and with change comes beautiful realizations on how to do life. So this Christmas- I am thankful for the gift of Time. What are you grateful for?
