You have probably heard of the intensive skin care regimens a lot of Koreans do daily.

But it’s not just their hard work that pays off. Ingredients found in most Korean skin care products are vital to this too.

Having said that, we owe a lot of thanks to “Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate”.

What is Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate?

At first glance, this ingredient might sound intimidating. It is quite a mouthful to pronounce after all.

It sounds like something you would find in food, rather than in skin care. Well, in fact, it is too. Let me break it down for you:

Galactomyces is a genus of fungi in the family Dipodascaceae. I know what you’re thinking, why would I apply mold (fungus) on my face? That’s gross!

Well, think about it. There’s mold in a lot of food and beverages we take in too.

History of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate

In fact, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, or GFF, was actually discovered by accident at a sake (Japanese rice wine) brewery in the 1970’s.

They noticed how the workers had flawless and wrinkle-free hands despite their faces looking aged and worn out from work.

They did further research and soon birthed the ingredient in a lot of anti-aging formulas. Apart from Korean and Japanese skin care products, you find GFF in soy sauce, rice vinegar, miso, and wines too!

Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate Broken Down:

Ferment is the product of fermented yeast.

During fermentation, they are placed inside bioreactors, or fermentation units. them with food, and the right environment for them to grow and multiply.

When these microorganisms grow, they excrete nutrient-dense substances beneficial for the skin. The byproducts have moisturizing and antioxidant effects.

Filtrate is the liquid left after filtration. Once the fermentation process finishes, the yeast and other unwanted materials are filtered out.

Only the good stuff remains and goes in skin care production.

Studies on Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate

The Asian Journal of Beauty and Cosmetology had a study submitted in 2014.

The study evaluated the effects of essence-formed cosmetic ingredients containing the Galactomyces ferment filtrate on human skin improvements.

Afterwards, they conducted tests to check keratinization, pores, sebum excretion, brightness, and acne.

They studied twenty subjects. Each result was determined by using the essence containing 97% of Galactomyces ferment filtrate on their faces three times a day.

The results?

Many of the enlarged pores and blackheads on the volunteer’s faces were significantly reduced by more than 15.66% and 21.84% respectively by using the essence.

This was compared to the number of enlarged and clogged pores on the untreated control faces.

The amount of sebum and keratin in faces were meaningfully reduced by 64.17% and 16.47%, respectively.

They further demonstrated that the levels of skin brightness were improved after treatment of the reagent by 2.49%.

Moreover, acne was reduced by 9.59%.

The volunteers were highly satisfied with these results. This shows that GFF in essence-formed cosmetics has a highly improved effect on facial skin. (Effects of GFF in Cosmetics)

Benefits of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate (GFF)

Judging on the results of studies and surveys, we know that GFF is heaven sent to the cosmetic industry

It’s rich in vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids that help to protect the skin against damage.

They also found antioxidant effects and an increase in hyaluronan production in epidermal cells.

More hyaluronic acid in the skin means more hydrated, plumper, and healthier skin.

GFF is effective in shrinking pore size, moisturizing, brightening, and balancing uneven skin tone. This allows you to have that glass-like, vibrant looking complexion you desire!

It also works in controlling sebum (skin oil) production, decreasing acne, and reducing blackheads.

Apart from that, it is a potent anti-aging ingredient. It increases elasticity, nourishes and revitalizes facial skin. Who doesn’t want to look forever young?

Is Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate Safe for Sensitive Skin?

As mentioned, GFF has many benefits.

Its moisturizing properties are great if you have dry and tired skin. Overall, GFF is a safe ingredient to use. However, there have been a few user complaints of irritation, especially for sensitive skin.

Malasesszia folliculitis or fungal acne is caused by yeast instead of bacteria. It is present as small flesh to red-colored bumps on the skin.

Take note that Galactomyces is a fungus. So people who suffer from this fungal acne cannot use products containing Galactomyces as it will make their acne worse.

A lot of organisms live on our skin.

This includes many types of bacteria and fungi. Sometimes organisms living on our skin do not work well with Galactomyces as it is a foreign organism.

Some people find that products containing Galactomyces irritate their skin, make it red and bumpy.

You won’t immediately know how your skin will react to a skin care product unless you give it a try.

It is strongly advisable to apply a new product in small quantities to a small part of your face. Test out the waters first!

Conclusion

I’m grateful for all the skin care products made available in the market. The Korean and Japanese ones are definitely a crowd favorite because of their unique formulas.

GFF in the formulations has given a lot of effective skin care benefits. I guess that’s why they’re gaining so much popularity by the day. One study even mentions some possibility of antioxidant benefits.

For a word of caution, when trying out new products, make sure to test them in small quantities. Make sure you are not prone to fungal acne.

Once you get a hang of it and find one that suits you, then you’re on the right track to getting that flawless skin you desire!
